Water Droplets

Had some free time today to do an exercise. This one’s probably one of the most challenging table top photography I had to do because of the set up. But it gets easy once you get the hang of it.

Dean Collins on Digital and Stock Photos

Dean Collins is a renowned photographer. He taught advanced lighting classes during the 80s and apparently, he’s one guy who knows how to use the different gear they had back then and he understood how light works. His lectures are pretty much scattered in Youtube and they are still very much applicable in this day and age. Of all the videos, what got my attention is his take on digital photos, manipulation, and stock photos. This was shot in 1998 and most, if not all, are pretty accurate.

Trigger Canon DSlrs via iPhone

Here’s a cool way to trigger Canon EOS Dslrs — use your iPhone. But seriously, I don’t think it’s very much worth it but it looks cool though.

Weekend quicklinks

I’ve been very busy lately working on a couple of sites and might have a big shoot sometime soon. Here are some inspiring photographers to check out.

  • Check out fine art photographer Jo Whaley’s portfolio. Amazing stuff.
  • Fine art photographer Alan Babbit did something a lot of other guys wouldn’t have been able to do their entire life — take great photographs inspite of his Parkinson’s disease.
  • Kenneth Parker has a very impressive gallery. Check out his works. It’s a dream job. Wink

Off-camera Flash: Why

img_3954I know a number of photographers who, once they’ve bought their external flashes, would stop exploring the various usage of that powerful light. I’m saddened by the fact that they’re already content with using their flashes on-board their camera and not realizing their little speedlites can do more than that.

Speedlites these days can be triggered without them having to be on top of your camera and that’s one of the strengths of today’s technology. Furthermore, if you’re using your camera’s proprietary speedlite, you enjoy the benefit of letting the camera adjust the power of the flash for you.

I love the versatility and the quality of light the small speedlites give me. I can have a studio in the middle of the forest, at the beach, or anywhere else for that matter. You don’t have to lug around long cables and heavy equipment to set up your lights. You can place them in small places and make a big difference in your photo.

For comparison, I made an impromptu shoot during work and took different shots of my friend using flash (so forgive me for the extremely horrible portraits) and here’s what happened: More

I was in my prof’s seminar today to help out as his assistant called in sick. It was the third and last day of his seminar so there was also the customary class picture. More

Stars Time Lapse

Funny how I almost forgot about this time-lapse photography I did when we went to Punta de Uian in Zambales for the first time.  I used an intervalometer and set my camera on a tripod and left it at the roof for about an hour. I would’ve gone longer with it but due to time constraints and fatigue, I had to stop the camera. Enjoy! Camera More

Location Lighting with Drew Gardner

Too bad I don’t have the means and the resources to get this DVD cheaply. The cost of the shipping is more than that of the DVD itself so I don’t think that it is a good idea. However, this DVD, I believe is a very good lighting resource. Judging from the sample images and teaser, this is something that no photographer should pass up.

Here’s a cool behind the scenes fashion shoot that I really find very informative. It made some really good use of studio space, flags, gels, backdrops and what not. You can check out the photo sets over at Flickr.

Punta De Uian take 2

Punta De Uian Main Hotel/Lobby

We went back up to Punta de Uian today, April 7, 2009, to shoot some more new rooms — the duplex and the triplex as content to their site. There’s also the unfinished chapel which is a shame because I wanted to take a shot of the interior. However, the place is not yet done and there are ‘x’ marks on the glasses still and what not.

Now, I’m still clueless which photography specialty I would like to really get into but it seems that real estate photography is nice. I like the challenge of using flash and the ambient light, you should be able to balance the 2 to get a well-lit photo. Being creative is key to getting the proper set up and I love the challenge it gives. Camera
